I have been a technology teacher for 10 years and wrote my parochial elementary school's curriculum. Tons of the new technology are awesome tools for the future. The biggest difference that I see in where I teach and public school is the parental involvement. Today's family is different than the family in which I grew up.
I do NOT agree that using a word processor 'dumbs down' the user. Not at all. I finally began, as an adult, using words that were in my verbal vocabulary (because I had spellcheck to get instant feedback). I lost my fear of writing incorrectly. It made me a braver writer.
The first thing I would tell President Obama is to change the school calendar (federally) so that students spend more time learning. This calendar was initially created to allow students to be home for agricultural purposes, but that era has ended. It would more cost effective and would benefit everyone. I don't see any negatives to a longer school year. Studies have proven that students retain the curriculum when they are on a year-round calendar, not a 9-month one. I would prefer to teach on this schedule, too. In my opinion, this would be the best change to education.
