We've been covering these low-cost, low-powered, ultra mobile devices since June. All major PC manufacturers now have a version marketed specifically to education (k-6 for the most part). Have you seen them? Do you like them?

Interesting piece on changes at OLPC:

OLPC 2.0: After Layoffs, One Laptop Foundation Reboots With New Focus and Big Plans

Robert Buderi 1/29/09

For those inspired by Nicholas Negroponte’s vision of bringing affordable computing to every child on the planet, it was a sad day early this month when the One Laptop Per Child Foundation he founded announced it was laying off half its staff and undertaking a significant reorganization.

I think Netbooks can provide a low-cost solution to students and low-processor users.  If you are a light user of a computer, then a Netbook with the ability to save to a USB or SD/MMC would be a good option for you. I find that people often buy something they can't maintain and never really use the "power" that it has.

My school is purchasing 32 netbooks (Acer's new 10" model) for use as a classroom set.  We are an elementary school, so our processor needs are relatively low.

I am excited to get them and start using them.  They give more space for students to work, put more machines in the student's hands, and do everything we use more powerful laptops for.

FYI - Most Netbooks come with 160 gb hard drive, so you don't need USB storage.

I have a Samsung NC10, and I love it.  It runs Power Point, Firefox (with multiple tabs), and Streaming Music without bogging down.  I haven't used it to edit video yet, but photo editing hasn't been too bad.
