I work at a small Christian school. We switched to laptops for teachers and in the labs this year and added wireless to those rooms first, and then the entire school. We use AirPort Extremes that are coordinated. Works very nice. My former school was mostly wireless due to wiring restrictions. We lost part of the network after a storm and finished half the year w/o internet access for about 1/2 the teachers. Very frustrating. They finally fixed it this summer.

We use wi fi at the very small (two classroom) sixth grade environmental education program where I am student teaching and it works very well! Each student can grab a laptop and sit throughout the small school and work on individual or group projects.  In a perfect world the signal would reach just outside the building to the outdoor "lunchroom" that consists of picnic tables under a silver maple tree.  I would so love if the students could research the bird that just flew over using the Internet.  I know of another outdoor educator who uses his iphone to identify bird calls, and can even attract birds with their familiar calls while walking in the woods with students.

There are so many awesome applications that can merge technology with nature in the modern classroom, too bad our computers are generally too outdated or way to slooooow to make the best of the new technology!  ~Sally

I had wireless in my classroom and it was very beneficial. Students were asked to complete two online assignments in which we brought the laptops from the computer lab into our classroom and allowed them to research. It was very engaging and very successful. Students enjoyed it and told me this was their favorite assignment so far.

WIFI is great. I think it could be a good idea when you are setting group projects for students. There would definitely need to be some kind of monitoring of the sites that they are visiting or perhaps some software to block specific sites. Thanks.
