My Big Campus, from Lightspeed Systems, is an online service that allows schools to create an engaging, collaborative online environment.I’ve been using it since September and am finding it very easy and useful. I wrote aboutmy intial impressions hereand will be documenting my experience using it throughout this school year.Inviting people to join My Big Campus is easy. You can invite your colleagues or students via email or generate a link with code for them to use. This makes it easier to add your students to My Big Campus. You can also enter each student in manually, creating an account for them yourself.
You can also integrate your Twitter account with My Big Campus, allowing you to send notices out on Twitter also. If you have students or colleagues who are on Twitter, this makes communicating with them easier.Another feature I like is the Quick Link feature. This allows you to create a quick link to any page on the site and easily access them from the top menu bar.
My Big Campus also has a nice notification system. There is a icon for quick access to your notifications (it’s the one to the left of the quick links icon shown above). You can also set it up to have notifications sent to your email or a SMS message sent. Notifications can be enabled for when someone posts on your wall, comments on your wall, assigns you an assignments, sends you a message, or assigns you a quiz. This makes it easy to keep up with student comments or questions. It also means that students will be notified of assignments or comments so that they don’t miss it.My Big Campus is a very useful and powerful tool for educators.I’ll be exploring more features each month.David Andrade is a Physics Teacher and Educational Technology Specialist in Connecticut.
