To be green, or not to be green. Mm...

There is a combination of approaches that must be understood. There is not a silver bullet. Investing in efficient equipment can not completely take the spotlight, nor can altering behaviors. Both considerations need to be addressed. This article seems to point out that changing your behaviors that you are used to is difficult, and this particular individual has little interest in changing his.

This is not about freedoms or feelings. It's about $. When you work for a company (or school) you follow their rules or you have the freedom to find a job somewhere else. The bottom line is the bottom line. So, is it more cost effective to turn off the computer? "So turning PCs off on the weekend saves our school district about $100,000/yr using this estimate." This seems to answer it.

It is only one way discussion. What does it cost the EXTRA power used in booting-up the computer on Monday? Then compare with the saving in turning it off during the weekend. That's it the real issue. It also should be noted that the power surge created by a mass of booting computers on Monday morning! Is it safe and fail-proof?

What does that mean, "to make energy savings work?" Energy savings always works. Either you save it or you don't. The real issue is whether I have the freedoms to spend my energy as I wish or if I need to bow to the "green" god and do as you seem fit for my life. Let's take it to the ridicules and make a law or recommendation as to how long I have to get through a door before I close it. When I lived in my parent's house, similar rules applied but now I make my own rules in such issues. By the way, I find it interesting that "going green" is reducing our carbon foot print when all thing green require CO2 to remain that way.
