Sixteen schools in Chesterfield County Public Schools outside of
Richmond have officially ‘got game’ with the recent addition of Tabula
Digita’s research-based DimensionU
Learning System to its math classrooms.
“We are thrilled to have our students join what is becoming the world’s
largest community of students pursuing collaborative learning in
immersive worlds,” said Greg Jastrzemski, instructional specialist for
mathematics. “It’s one of the most engaging and relevant student
practice tools I have ever seen. It not only captures student interest
but it invigorates their learning; even for a complex subject like math.”
The schools in Chesterfield County join those in other Virginia districts including Montgomery County, Loudoun County, Alexandria City, Fairfax County, and Richmond City, among others that over the past two years have embraced educational video game technology as a way to help students learn.
For Jastrzemski, adding DimensionU goes beyond the intrinsic ingenuity
of gaming in the classroom. “The research speaks for itself:
well-designed immersive educational video games can improve students’
mastery of mathematical skills and significantly raise scores on
benchmark exams. In its short tenure here in Chesterfield, we already
have several testimonies of students succeeding in math where they
otherwise weren’t before.”
In all, DimensionU Games embed over 400 math and literacy skills in a
multitude of 3D, interactive formats. Available on both Windows and
Macintosh platforms, the games assist students in learning and mastering
multi-faceted mathematical and literacy concepts within
three-dimensional, lesson-based environments. All the math games align to standards set by the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and all mathematics
and literacy content is aligned to standards for all 50 states and the
District of Columbia.
