Recently a major breakthrough at the Gotthard Base Tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland opened the way for the completion of the longest railway tunnel in the world.  Completion is slated for 2016.  The company that manufactured the massive drilling machine, Herrenknecht, presents a very informative site that covers all aspects of this tunnel.  Watch a brief movie of the machine as it is drilling, examine cutaways of the various rock formations encountered during the drilling, and see a photo gallery of the progress of the project.  This site is interesting from both a technology and geology point of view.
