Over the years, the Smithsonian folklorists have developed guidelines for collecting folklife and oral history from people in the community, families, friends, and veterans in order to preserve living history.   The interviewing guide provides possible questions such as: what are some of your childhood memories, what special food traditions does your family have, and what family heirlooms do you possess. Once the interviews are held, the Smithsonian suggests many project ideas in order to showcase the findings.  Fill scrapbooks, compose songs or put together heritage boxes for display.
