Jott: Sending Email via Voice Mail

In my role as building principal I am quite often out of my office, and not near my computer. It is during some of those times that I will find the need to share an email message with someone on my staff, or add something to my to-do list. While I can compose and send email from my phone, the time, and manual dexterity, required to do so proves to be a barrier. Recently I began playing with a web service called Jott. Jott allows you to call a phone number, and leave a voice mail message that is then transcribed into an email and sent to you or to others.

The messages are sent as a text email, with a link to a voice recording of your message. I’m impressed with how well it transcribes your voice message into text. With a little creative filtering in your email you can organize reminders for home and for work. Also you can easily import your address book into Jott and use the service to send messages to others just by calling a number, saying the recipients name, and then recording the message. Jott transcribes the message and sends it as an email or a SMS text message.

Recently I went to visit our 5th grade students at science camp on the Oregon coast. While there I found the need to send some messages to my school secretary. From my mobile phone I called the Jott number. Once connected I was prompted to say the name of the person I was Jotting. I said my secretary's name, and at the beep I recored my message. Within minutes the message was transcribed and sent via email to her inbox. On the way back from the coast I was thinking of several upcoming meetings and to-do items associated with those meetings. I dialed up Jott from my phone (handsfree dialing, of course) and recorded my new to-do list, and sent it to myself. When I got home that evening the email was waiting for me in my inbox. I am finding Jott to be more than a web novelty and it is fast becoming a valuable tool in my daily work.

This looks like a great tool. Sadly it is only available in US and Canada currently. If you want an alternative try Sprindoo
http://www.springdoo.com/default.aspx

It isn't quite the same cause it doesn't transcribe the messages into text for you but it does send a link so the recipient can hear the message. It now also handles video which is pretty cool. And it is available worldwide. (PS I am not associated with springdoo in any capacity whatsoever)

Wow Tim,
That is a great description of how you are using Jott. What a great tool and it sounds like you can filter the messages in your mail box and assign paths for the email. Great!

Hey Paul, thank you for the heads up about Sprindoo... I plan to take a look...

Interesting blog post. I just started using www.mailtovoice.com and like it a lot. I hope that Jott will be mashed some day with this tool!
