Things I Know...

This post is much different than any previous post I have written. The content has been in development for 48 years. These are things I believe to be true about life-and about being a successful person.

I decided to post these (actually written over the past three years) when I saw that Secret to Success meme that traveled throught the blogosphere recently. This is my take, and I hope that you find meaning in them as well. Here they are...

A successful life can be achieved in many ways and is measured only by the person whose life it is.

A rich life is characterized by having many different types of experiences. These experiences may be rewarding, or they may be painful, nonetheless, all enrich one’s life over time.

Health and friendship are more important than wealth and status.

Personal attributes that are desirable in an individual include having honor, possessing trustworthiness, compassion, honesty, integrity and diligence.

Almost everything happens for a reason and it is important to recognize the reason when possible.

Life is long, don’t be in a hurry.

Life is short, live each day purposefully.

Smile and know it shall pass.

Everyone has setbacks; persistence and faith in one’s self will see you through.

Get to know people and let them amaze you; realize there is value in everyone.

Sometimes, experiences are not long in duration, do not have the desired outcome, yet become the most profound moments of a person’s life.

Don’t take 16 items through the 15 item express line at the grocery store. And six cans of the same soup do not count as one item...

Mostly live within your means but buy that $100 tie once in a while.

But never buy a minivan.

Spend as much time with your parents as you can. They are the most important people you will ever know.

Develop belief and dependence in yourself.

Live life without regret, for there is nothing worse than not doing, not saying, and not trying, that what you believe in.

During the course of a life, there are defining moments. These moments may be obvious or subtle, and direct the course of an individual’s life from that point on. Many times these become obvious in later years, when one can appreciate their significance and true meaning.

Sometimes individuals select the path of their lives, other times the pathway is selected for them.

Hold on tightly to those things you love.

Take risks, that’s how you become great.

Develop a sense of place as it will ground you.

When things go wrong, and they will, have a refuge and a soft place to fall.

Challenges in early life prepare you for larger challenges later in life, when overcoming them truly counts.

Your purpose in life will emerge sooner or later. Stay tuned.

If your father is a White Sox fan, so are you. If your father is a Cub’s fan, so are you. Embrace it.

Disappointments may be frequent, not many lives experience few disappointments. Disappointment gives rise to fortitude, fortitude gives rise to determination, and determination gives rise to success. Such is the purpose of disappointment.

Keep the faith.

Stay the course.

Find solace in your personal goodness, and see the two previous.

There is no place like home.

You are given one chance, stop wishing for what was, for what could have been, or for what might be and start living as if it mattered.

Let your accomplishments be a part of your foundation, draw confidence from them, and apply that confidence to all areas of your life.

Don’t burn bridges. You may have to retreat.

Don’t do this so you can do that. Just do that.

There is no standard one way of life. The only standard that applies to life is that you find ways to live it on your terms, no matter what.

Give yourself the best chance possible.

Have a plan. It might not be in final form, but have one anyway.

Think about your life often, remember the people who have enriched it, remember the moments shared, and smile. Do this when times are difficult....

Do not watch reality shows. Your life is reality enough. See above.

Be the biggest fan of your life….

Thanks for reading.
Dave

Comments

Well thought out and well said. Too few of us take the time to clarify what is true about life and what is important to us. Fewer still attempt to share their experience with others.

James: thank you for the kind comments-they are appreciated. David
