Class Tech Tips: 12 Apps and Websites for Super Readers

Teacher? Parent? School leader? You’ll want to check out the amazing Every Child a Super Reader: 7 Strengths to Open a World of Possible by Pam Allyn and Ernest Morrell (find it here). It’s full of strategies for cultivating a love of reading inside and outside of the classroom. This book contains lesson ideas, book lists and actionable tips for educators and families.

I thought I would put together a list of my favorite apps for super readers. These iPad and Android apps are perfect for independent reading in school, family read alouds at home, and to support the development of reading skills. I hope that you’ll check out the ones that pique your interest and add any of your favorites to the comments section below!

  1. Sesame Alphabet Kitchen can help young readers develop letter recognition skills.
  2. PlayKids Stories is a reading library for students with a range of titles for students.
  3. Looking for nonfiction passages? Newsela has lots of leveled text to search through.
  4. CommonLit is a great resource for short passages in fiction and nonfiction genres.
  5. Paired passages can help students make connections as they read – see this list from ReadWorks.
  6. LibriVox offers audio clips of classic books.
  7. This Shakespeare ebooks series is a fantastic choice for supporting growing readers.
  8. One More Story is an online library for students with plenty of fiction titles.
  9. The team at News-O-Matic publishes five new current events stories every day.
  10. Super readers need to master their letter sounds – check out Intro to Letters by Montessorium.
  11. Blue Planet Tales is an interactive reading library for students.
  12. Brainspace is a magazine with augmented reality experiences featured it in my book on scannable technology.
