Goal: Set the Stage for Innovation

Goal: Set the Stage for Innovation

Welcome to Cycle 7 of The 30 Goals Challenge: Make it Meaningful!

“Keep in mind that imagination is at the heart of all innovation. Crush or constrain it and the fun will vanish.” – Albert-László Barabási

Goal: Set the stage for innovation this year with your learners by implementing a program or creating the environment for innovation. You can do this by creating a makerspace, genius bar, creating an innovation space, doing a Genius Hour project, implementing a student Shark Tank, or implementing a problem-based project where students innovate to solve world issues.

Recently, I’ve conducted a few interviews on how teachers can be more innovative and help learners be innovative. First, we have to shake things up and make sure we provide opportunities for innovation. This means a project that allows students to make a few mistakes and have a few Failed Attempts in Learning (F.A.I.L) and walks them through this process before they find the right solution. In other words, we have to teach students to reflect on their failures and inspect them to see what other ideas, avenues, and paths they reveal. I talk more about innovation and failure in this interview with Derek Rhodenizer:
