8 Web Tools for Creating Digital Magazines

“Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.” – Joseph Pulitzer

When I was a child, my father only accepted homemade gifts. My sisters and I spent several days creating various publications with construction paper and markers, including magazines. Now, creating a digital magazine is much easier. With web tools, students can layout their writings, pick from hundreds of cool fonts, and add their own images or choose from a library of stock images. Some web tools allow students to embed video and audio. Below I’ve listed some free educational web tools for creating a class ezine. These web tools can be used to complete the Mission: Seek and Preserve the Truth in my new book, Hacking Digital Learning Strategies: 10 Ways to Launch EdTech Missions.

  • LucidPress‘s drag and drop publishing platform makes it easy to create a digital ezine. Students can add stock images from their library.
  • Flipsnack supports digital magazines with audio, video, text, images, links and voice-over. Quickly transform a pdf into an embeddable ezine.
  • Canva (Web/iOS) also has a template for creating a digital magazine and a collection of images, clipart, and graphics to choose from.
  • Joomag offers a free educational account for up to 30 students ad free.
  • MadmagZ has one free ezine template students can edit collaboratively.
  • Create a class magazine with this Time Magazine Google Slides template.
  • Flipboard (iOS/Android) allows you to curate students’ posts from blogs or websites into a magazine like format.
  • Issuu is another free way to create and publish a digital magazine with less options than the other tools and doesn’t have an education account like the other tools.
