Tennessee School Districts Implement Visitor Management System

Three school districts in Tennessee have improved school security by changing the way administrators manage visitors entering school buildings. Shelby County, Maury County and Rutherford County School Districts have all implemented visitor management software produced by Raptor Technologies, provider of visitor management technologies for K-12 schools.

“The Raptor system creates a secure educational environment and allows us to proactively screen every individual entering our school buildings,” said Stan Breeden, Director of Operations at Maury County Schools.

By implementing the Raptor system, the school districts can screen visitors entering their school buildings against a national database of registered sex offenders, print badges for visitors, and remotely access data to tell them who is in school buildings, even in the case of an evacuation.

“The Raptor team helped us quickly install these new security measures in our schools,” said Bob Williams, Systems Analyst for Shelby County Schools. “We now have a uniform procedure for visitor check-in to stop potential offenders before they are allowed onto school grounds.”

The three school districts are among the first in Tennessee to implement visitor management software and represent approximately 200 schools of the more than 12,000 schools already using the Raptor system nationwide. Each district previously had visitor management systems in place that were outdated. For example, as one of the fastest growing districts in Tennessee, Rutherford County Schools previously used logbooks. To upgrade their system, the district selected Raptor for its ability to easily create district-wide reports for visitors and for its ability to create custom alerts at each of its schools when screening the visitors and volunteers entering a building.

“Rutherford County Schools has served as a model for many other school districts in academics, planning and safety measures,” said Josh Kubly, Director of School Safety at Rutherford County Schools. “The Raptor system gives us the necessary tools to improve our safety protocols and supports our goals to create a safe environment for all.”
