Leaders' Edge

Topic: Leadership and Vision
High Tech/High Touch

As we place increasingly high demands on our teachers, our students, and ourselves how can school leaders help balance expectations with personal interaction and community?

John Naisbitt first talked about the concept of High Tech/High Touch in his book Megatrends (1984). While he was talking specifically about technology and human interaction, the concept applies to rapid change and information overload as well.

It doesn't take much effort to reach out to members of the school community. What's important is to do something you're genuinely comfortable with, that you can sustain over time. For example:

  • Make time to be on the playground before or after school, or during recess to talk with students;
  • Drop into the staff lounge to chat with teachers;
  • Carry post-its when you do informal walk-throughs and leave quick notes behind.

It's all too easy to get caught up in the tasks for the day. Take the time to have positive contact with staff and students daily. You'll all feel better!
