Have You Done your Part to Educate Staff and Students about Copyright Policies?

How can a site administrator demonstrate that she or he has informed student and staff about copyright policies and issues?

Recent demands by Microsoft that schools and districts conduct software audits for every computer on site have raised awareness that school administrators must enforce copyright policies. Here are steps you can take to document efforts to educate staff and students about copyright:

  • Keep current signed Acceptable Use Policies on file for staff and students;
  • Post the district copyright policy near copiers, in the lab, and media center;
  • Include the policy in student and staff handbooks;
  • Review the policy annually during a staff meeting;
  • Require teachers to briefly review the policy with students each semester.

It's also a good idea to have hard drives checked periodically to ensure that the software stored there is legally licensed. If you don't have a site technician, ask the district office for assistance.
