Auto-Login: To Do or Not To Do
Question:
Do I want to configure a computer to automatically log in to the network?
The IT Guy says:
There are several circumstances when it is helpful to have a computer automatically log in, rather than requiring users to enter an authenticated user id and password. Computer labs, especially in elementary school settings where students do not have their own login user ids, are prime candidates. Computers in libraries or used for presentations, like in auditoriums, could also be configured for automatic login. Teacher computers in the classroom should most likely NOT be configured with auto-login, since any person using that computer would have the teacher's access rights on the computer and network. Even if computers in a lab, library, or other setting are set to automatically log-in, users are free to log out and then log in with their own user id and password. Setting up auto-logins can save time and speed access for users in shared access areas, however.
