The IT Guy

Altered Internet Explorer Icon

Question: For some reason all my Internet Web pages and Frontpage web pages that end in .htm or .html file extensions saved to my hard drive changed icons. Internet Explorer opens them properly and they are all active.

Yet the icon looks like the Windows 98 logon icon. How can I redirect the icon to the "Blue E" that represents Internet Explorer? I have tried many things but nothing seems to work.

The IT Guy says:
You can reset all your icons to default values by using find file to locate ShellIconCache. It is a hidden file so you will need to change folder options first to show hidden files. Reboot after deleting ShellIconCache and your icons should be back to normal. Alternatively, the Tweak UI tool allows you to change file icons, but keep in mind it is an unsupported Microsoft tool provided that is recommended for Power Users only. It is available on http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/ downloads/PowerToys/ Networking/NTTweakUI.asp. A virus could also be the problem, so make sure your virus definitions are up to date and run a full scan on your hard drive.
