PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)

Exploring Themes

Category: Thematic Instruction

Tip:
Teachers may need to spend time exploring a theme before they introduce it to their classes. As their professional developer, you can do some of the work for them by:

  • Asking your teachers what curriculum areas they are teaching and the existing resources they use. Looking for resources and materials that address the themes that are appropriate for their grade and topic.
  • Reviewing websites so students will be able to use their time effectively. You may also want to bookmark the sites or create a website with the resources listed for your teachers. Go to http://4teachers.org for an easy way to make a quick resource site.
  • Helping your teachers create a theme corner or containers that stores thematic resources such as related books, templates, lessons, websites, videos, software, posters, and more.

For more information on thematic instruction, go to Funderstanding's site.
