PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)
Images and Fair Use in the Classroom
Category:
Copyright Issues
Tip:
Images help students better understand what they are supposed to be learning. You can help teachers by finding images that expand on a particular theme and compiling them on a website by theme. Some examples of types of images students might use in their projects:
- maps or globes
- charts or graphs
- posters
- photographs
- artifacts
- drawings
- cartoons
- animations
Students need to know about fair use and copyright issues when using images as part of their work. Teachers can avoid copyright violations and legally use copyrighted materials if they understand and comply with the fair use guidelines. Check out University of Maryland's Copyright and Fair Use site.
If students find, capture, or scan images that are copyrighted, they will want to ask permission to use them. Check out Landmark Project's Permission template and then properly cite any image source by using the Citation Machine.
Copyright-free images are available at Pics4learning.
