PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)

Find Images that Connect to Themes

Category: Appropriate Resources

Tip:
Images can be used as examples, as evidence, or for expression. Many students are visual learners and understand concepts better if they see a picture that represents a topic or idea.

As a professional developer, you can model for teachers how students can use images with the curriculum.

  • Show them how to study photos such as the visual images from EverestQuest.com so they can understand the stories about the expedition.
  • Review how to use images as primary source documents such as the images located at the Library of Congress or at the National Archives and Records Administration.
  • Share, discuss, and expand on any images you find that depict what they are learning in the curriculum.
  • Create original images or capture digital images with a scanner or digital camera that best represent the topic.

The best images are the pictures students create themselves. Students love to see themselves in pictures and video. Just make sure your teachers follow their school or district acceptable use and permission policies before posting any student's names or pictures.
