PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)

Choosing Appropriate Themes

Category: Thematic Instruction

Tip:
A teacher can act as a tour guide to help students see the richness of the curriculum. As you work with teachers, model how they can share their own passion with their students, why a book or resource means something to them, and how students can find their own passion. During the workshop:

  • Ask teachers to pair and share themes using a brainstorming program such as Inspiration. If you do not have Inspiration, you can download a trial copy.
  • Discuss what meaningful themes are and review several themes as examples.
  • Encourage discussions about the theme that the group determined was the most important for them to research.
  • Develop extension activities that help connect the theme.
