PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)
Keeping Everyone's Attention
Category:
Workshop Design
Tip:
Teachers have so much on their minds that it is difficult for professional developers to keep their attention during workshops. Teachers enjoy spending time with their colleagues, so take advantage of it.
- Provide healthy and fun snacks
- Give them breaks around every 75 minutes
- Offer time for hands-on activities
- Use technology to teach the content using activities such as scavenger hunts, WebQuests, etc.
- Offer 3-5 mini workshops instead of one long workshop and have your teachers choose 3.
- Pair people together high/lower proficiency
- Create small groups based upon learning styles rather than proficiency level, often the information intake mechanism is as important as the proficiency level.
