PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)
Just-in-Time Teaching
Category:
Computer Labs
Tip:
In many schools and districts, computer teachers are responsible for project-based learning in the lab with all students. A strategy that works for us might work for you.
- Create a theme-based lab curriculum for the first six weeks of each quarter.
- Base the curriculum on ISTE NETS for students.
- In the last three weeks, interview each classroom teacher and develop just-in-time lessons for the students that align to what is being taught in the classroom.
- Encourage the classroom teacher to be part of the lesson development and delivery.
The value is that the lab teacher is ultimately responsible (especially helpful in a school where staff is new to technology) for developing the integrated lesson. The students are applying the skills they just learned the previous six weeks to a classroom specific project.
