PDQ (Professional Development QuickTips)
Teaching to Varied Proficiencies
Category:
Adult Learners
Tip:
How do you reach every teacher if each is at a different proficiency level?
- Start every staff development session by conducting a technology skills assessment.
- Keep the technology level low by using a paper and pencil based assessment that covers the 10 ISTE NETS-T areas. Many new teachers are put off by an online assessment.
- Use the results to help determine the teacher's skill level.
- Attempt to schedule training classes and mentoring support accordingly.
- Group teachers so the instructor can keep an eye on the ones who need a little more assistance.
- Pace the training according to ability level.
Knowing your "audience" is important in developing a quality training experience.
