Name:
WhaleNet - Boston, Massachusetts
Brief Description of the Site:
WhaleNet's Satellite-Tagging Observation Program (STOP) is a centerpiece of the educational, curriculum based web site, which uses authentic, real-time data and information to enhance interest in sciences, geography, and mathematics. Students can track, research, and study marine animals as they move about the oceans in real-time. Where do these animals go? Why do they go there? What environmental conditions may influence their movements? These and other questions can be studied in depth. Critical thinking, data assimilation, and analysis are just a few of the skills, consistent with national standards, reinforced using WhaleNet's remote sensing resources. WhaleNet has satellite tagged and archived satellite sensing data from 50 marine mammals and 15 sea turtles with the use of various satellite tagging devices.
How to use the site:
This site works well for interdisciplinary teaching. Mathematics, science, geography, critical thinking, and analysis are some of the ways to apply this site. Real data, information, images, curriculum based units, and more are here.
