- The U.S. Department of Education offers a vast array of online resources including a list of great links for kids.
- Yahooligans!, The Web Guide for Kids
- Science and the Environment At the National Science Foundation's Find Out Why site, kids can solve science mysteries, discover the best place on a bat to hit a ball, or find out what happens when a meteor hits. The Environmental Protection Agency offers several sites, including the Explorer's Club, with stories, activities and environmental information for younger kids; and Recycle City, with hundreds of ways a town can reduce, reuse, and recycle. At the EPA Student Center, older students learn about conservation, ecosystems, air, water, recycling, and human health.
- Social Studies History comes alive at several government Web sites. At the White House for Kids, First Cat Socks and First Dog Buddy are the guides. Kids can take a tour, learn about first families over the years, or write a letter to the president. The Library of Congress' Activities for Students Web site offers puzzles, riddles, and mysteries to teach information literacy skills. Even the CIA gets into the act with its Kids' Secret Zone, which teaches about intelligence gathering; and the CIA Factbook, which offers older students a wealth of world information.
- Money and Business The Treasury Department's Start Your Own Business and Learn About Taxes page takes kids through the process of choosing and launching a business (a lemonade stand, lawn mowing service, or rock band), paying taxes, and filing reports. Treasury's Page for Kids also has lots of information on money matters.
- Health The National Institutes of Health site offers kids activities including story books, riddles, environmental art and poetry, and a science spelling bee. At the Food and Drug Administration's kids' page, students meet Yorick the bionic skeleton, learn about food safety and what FDA inspectors look for, and discover how vaccines work. The Department of Health and Human Services' Girl Power Web site uses games, puzzles, and information to encourage positive health values and empower 9- to 14-year-olds to make the most of their lives.

Brought to you by Stanford Testing Systems, Inc., publishers of Stanford Studyguide for SAT Success, this site offers nearly 40 skill lessons to beef up math and verbal muscle. Each lesson features several SAT questions.

Need some test-taking tips? Want to improve your chances of getting a high score? Head for this SAT preparation site for tips and practice questions from the experts. You can download free diagnostic software that analyzes your strengths and weaknesses and learn the 100 most common SAT vocabulary words.
- Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day
Each day the folks at Merriam-Webster post a new word of the day with definition, sample sentence, and "Did you know" fact. Links to site archives provide access to previous words of the day and a "Words from the Lighter Side" Web site devoted to information and entertaining insights about "cool words" and the ways they have been used in different times and places.
- College Board Online
Highlights at this site include a SAT question of the day, SAT test-taking tips, a schedule of SAT test dates, ways to register for the SAT exam, plus some helpful advice about choosing a college. If you're looking for practice questions, however, you'll be disappointed.

- Boston University's Interactive WWW Games
- Chess Online
- Caissa is a full-featured Web chess server that allows live play via a Java applet and has additional support features including an online library, regular live tournaments and several member benefits such as messaging, games via correspondence, and user playing history. Membership costs $25 or $50 per year, depending on the membership level selected, and there is a 30-day free trial available.
- The Internet Chess Club is currently the most active online chess resource, with over 65,000 games played per day and an average of 1,000+ players logged in at any time. Endorsed by the USCF, ICC offers a free seven-day trial for anyone, and a 30-day trial for members of the USCF. Members can play via a Java interface similar to Caissa's, or choose to download a dedicated Internet chess client, designed for use with an appropriate Internet chess server. Membership costs $49 per year.
- The Free Internet Chess Server has no subscription fee. While this site is not as popular as the Internet Chess Club, there are still normally a few hundred players logged in at any time, ready to play live. Tournaments, automated lectures and grandmasters giving simultaneous exhibitions with instruction occur regularly.
