Building a Content-Rich School Web Page

By Kathleen Schrock

Looking for tips on how to put together a solid, engaging and professional school or classroom Web site? Read on for excerpts from Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators.

I have been scouring the Internet for well-done Web sites to support school curriculum since June of 1995, when I started the Guide for Educators. I'm happy to report there's been a marked increase in the number of sites available for educators to use to support teaching and learning. I've also noted that some of the best and most content-rich sites on the Net have been created not by publishers or large for-profit companies, but by educators and educational institutions, such as museums and universities.

I would like to propose to all educators that they "give back to the Net" when planning their school or classroom Web page, by including a content base others may use, too. I call this a "content-rich" Web page, and because I feel it is important to identify such sites, I've created the "Content Rules!" award honoring the best of the 2,000 my Guide links to via discoveryschool. com/schrock guide/content.html.

Here are some tips and ideas to consider as you design your own page.
