The Web Builder's Toolbox
By Eamonn O'Donovan
For ramping up, revamping, or revitalizing, the latest authoring, graphics, and hosting tools will help you build an A+ Web site.
As the girl stared at the image of the polar bear splashing through an Alaskan stream, she said to her classmate on the computer beside her, "This one is sticky." Confused, I asked her what she meant. "Oh," she said, "This site makes me want to stick around." This "stickiness" is the goal of any educator who seeks to build a school or district's Web presence. To that end, a Web site should be attractive, easy to navigate with well-placed toolbars, and maintain consistent rules of style so that people can always find what they came for.
The reality, however, is that the quality of school Web sites sometimes does not match the enthusiasm of those who create them. Let's face it--most educators don't have the time to develop and maintain a top-notch Web site. Yet, it has become essential that schools and districts present a first-rate Web site to the public. Not only are they a good venue for singing the praises of the school system, they offer a convenient way for parents and students to keep track of important projects, dates, and events.
Fortunately for schools, Web development has come a long way since the days of coding with the enigmatic Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Today, there's a wide range of tools for creating elegant and dynamic sites--whether you're a novice or an expert. Read on to discover how new Web editors, graphics programs, clip art sites, and hosting options can make finding your school's place in cyberspace an exciting and pain-free experience.
