Grants, Contests, Etc

Compiled by Kim Carter

Looking for funds to make an innovative technology project possible? Seeking recognition for outstanding teachers or students in your district? Here's the latest scoop on some great opportunities.

The Women's Sports Foundation administers several grants to further women's access to and involvement in sports:

  • The Aspire Higher Grassroots Grant provides funding to any individual, club, organization, or institution with a creative and innovative program that encourages girls and women to participate in sports and fitness. Individual grants between $250 and $1,000 are awarded. Submission deadlines for grant applications are March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31 annually.
  • The Travel and Training Fund provides direct financial assistance to aspiring women athletes with successful competitive records who have the potential to achieve even higher performance levels and rankings. Requests for assistance are considered for coaching, specialized training, equipment, attire, and/or travel. An individual may request up to $2,000 and a team up to $4,000. Individuals and teams must be: U.S. citizens or legal residents; amateur athletes or teams who compete regionally (outside their state), nationally, or internationally; and ranked by a national governing body. Funding requests will not be considered from high school sports teams, college or university sports teams, or community recreation sports teams. Applications must be received by July 31.
  • The Community Action Program is dedicated to helping communities of all sizes and types across the country show their support for girls and women in sports. The CAP "Take Action" grant program provides financial support of up to $250 for community events honoring and encouraging girls and women in sports in their communities. The CAP "Spread the Word" program provides items from the Women's Sports Foundation for distribution at CAP events. Applications for either program must be received at least two months prior to the event; events must be held by December 31.

For further information, guidelines, and application forms, visit the foundation's Web site.

The Nellie Mae Fund for Education provides grant funding for adult literacy, college preparation, minority high achievement, and out-of-school time programs. Any New England nonprofit organization, including public or private schools and colleges and community-based organizations, is eligible to apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $250,000. The foundation accepts short Preliminary Requests for Support at any time during the year. For information, contact Nellie Mae Foundation, 50 Braintree Hill Park, Ste. 110, Braintree, MA 02184; (877) 635-5436; fax (781) 348-4299; info@nmfdn.org.

AT&T Learning Network Grants Program focuses on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. Eligible are all accredited public and private elementary and secondary schools, as well as accredited public and private two- and four-year institutions of higher education and educational nonprofit organizations in the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories.

The program is most interested in projects that use technology to 1) promote family involvement in education; 2) provide professional development opportunities for teachers; and 3) develop and implement plans to promote lifelong learning and community collaboration. Awards vary, and applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. For guidelines, grant application procedures, and the AT&T Regional Contributions Manager for your area.

Verizon Foundation provides grants that focus on: linking computer literacy experts across the nation to create a more literate America; decreasing the digital divide in underserved communities; investing in education programs that develop a prepared workforce; partnering with the nonprofit community to expand their capacity through the use of technology; and promoting employee volunteerism for community support. United States 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that benefit customers, employees, and communities in the areas Verizon serves are eligible. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis from January through November and must be submitted online. For information, guidelines, and application instructions, visit the foundation Web site.
