October

The National Endowment for the Humanities' Schools for a New Millennium is a special initiative to enable schools, in partnership with colleges and communities, to design professional development activities integrating digital technology into the humanities classroom. Deadline: October 1.

Small Grants Program for K-6 Science and Math Education, sponsored by Toshiba America Foundation, awards grants for programs and activities that improve the classroom teaching and learning of science, mathematics, and technology for students in grades K-6. Deadline: October 1.

Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition, sponsored by the Siemens Foundation, promotes excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects in science, mathematics, and technology. Deadline: October 2.

The NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education's Learning and Leadership Grants fund high-quality professional development for public school teachers, public education support personnel, and public higher education faculty and staff. Deadline: October 15.

The National Endowment for the Humanities also offers funding for National Education Projects, which fall into three categories: Materials Development Projects, Curricular Development and Demonstration Projects, and Dissemination Projects. All projects relate to humanities education in K-12 and higher education. Deadline: October 15.

The Teacher as Researcher Grant, from the International Reading Association, supports classroom teachers in their inquiries about literacy and instruction. Deadline: October 15.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are open to students in grades five through 12 who have initiated a community service activity. Deadline: October 31.

The Computer Learning Foundation sponsors a variety of Computer Learning Month contests for students, teachers, and schools. Deadline: November; activities must take place in October.

NASA Office of Space Science's Initiative to Develop Education through Astronomy and Space Science funds innovative, start-up educational outreach projects that will enhance science education through astronomy and space science via collaboration between professional astronomers/space scientists and professional educators. Deadline: late October.

November

The American Association of School Librarians offers the ICPrize for Collaboration through Technology to collaborative teams of school library media specialists (members of AASL/ALA) and classroom teachers who have developed curriculum units incorporating Internet resources. Deadline: November 1.

The International Reading Association annually sponsors several awards:

The Eleanor M. Johnson Award recognizes an outstanding elementary classroom teacher of reading/language arts. Deadline: November 15.

The Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award honors an outstanding elementary teacher in grades K through six dedicated to improving teaching and learning through reflective writing about his or her teaching and learning process. Deadline: November 1.

The Nila Banton Smith Award is given to a middle or secondary school classroom teacher or reading teacher who has shown leadership in translating theory and current research into practice for developing content area literacy. Deadline: November 1.

b for Reading honors K-12 licensed or certified educators who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of reading education through the use of technology. Deadline: November 1.

Target All-Around Scholarships recognize the achievements of well-rounded students who demonstrate a commitment to their communities through volunteer service, education, and volunteerism. Deadline: November 1.

Target Teacher Scholarships are available at Take Charge of Education schools to teachers, principals, and administrative staff who plan to continue their education. Deadline: November 1.

The National Science Teachers Association annually administers several awards for teachers and students. Deadline for all programs: November 15.

The American Water Works Association Award recognizes a K-12 teacher for innovative instruction exploring sciences related to drinking water.

The Barrick Goldstrike Exemplary Elementary Earth Science Teaching Award is presented to an elementary science teacher for exemplary earth science teaching practices.

CIBA Specialty Chemicals sponsors the Exemplary Middle-Level and High School Science Teaching Awards for outstanding science educators.

The Drug, Chemical & Allied Trade Association Education Foundation's "Making a Difference" Award honors middle-level science programs that influence students to explore science and its application to global programs.

Estes/United States Space Foundation Space Educator Award honors a middle school science teacher.

The Gustav Ohaus Program for Innovation in Science Teaching is open to elementary through college-level science teachers who have developed innovative science programs.

The Robert H. Carleton Award recognizes one kindergarten through college-level science educator who is a member of NSTA and has made an outstanding contribution to science education at the national level.

The Science Screen Report Award focuses on a teacher's creative use of commercially available films or videotapes in developing a science unit or theme.

The Sheldon Exemplary Equipment and Facilities Award honors one K-12 classroom science teacher who demonstrates exemplary approaches to science teaching and new designs using science equipment and facilities.

The Shell Science Teaching Award, sponsored by Shell Oil, recognizes one outstanding K-12 classroom science teacher.

December

Classroom Connect's Internet Educator of the Year Award honors an educator who has successfully integrated the Internet into the curriculum and submits the best plan for future integration. Deadline: early December.

Intel Science Talent Search, sponsored by Intel and Science Service, provides U.S. high-school seniors who complete independent research projects the opportunity to submit entries to receive college recommendations, win scholarship prizes, meet leading scientists, and have their work exhibited at the National Academy of Sciences. Deadline: December 1.

The Lions Club International sponsors the annual International Peace Poster Contest for young people ages 11, 12, and 13. Deadline for ordering poster kits: December 1.

The top two students and top team from each local affiliated science fair can attend the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, competing in one of 15 science categories, ranging from biochemistry to zoology. The ISEF registration deadline (based on local competition) is December 31.

The National School Library Media Program of the Year Award, sponsored by Follett Library Resources, recognizes exemplary library media programs that are fully integrated into the curriculum. Deadline: January 5, 2002.

The American Association of University Women Educational Foundation offers Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships to K-12 public school teachers with projects designed to advance girls' interest in math, science, and/or technology. Deadline: January 10.

Toyota Motor Sales USA sponsors the annual Toyota's Investment in Mathematics Excellence, awarding grants for innovative projects that enhance mathematics education within a school. Deadline: January 11.

Community Action Grants are available from the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation for activities related to education and equity, particularly those supporting K-12 girls' interest and achievement in math, science, and/or technology. Deadline: January 15.

The American Welding Society Foundation, Inc., sponsors several scholarships for students pursuing careers in welding and related fields. Deadline for national scholarships: January 15.

Toyota Motor Sales USA also sponsors the annual Toyota TAPESTRY Grant Program, which awards grants to K-12 science teachers with innovative student projects in environmental education or physical science. Deadline: January 17.

The Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation recognizes teams of middle school students who have creative solutions to community problems. Deadline: January 31.

The annual Sea World/Busch Garden Environmental Excellence Awards recognize outstanding environmental efforts of young Americans from kindergarten through college age in eight thematic categories. Deadline: late January.

February

The American Association of School Librarians offers several annual grants and scholarships. Applicants must be personal members of AASL. Deadline for all contests is early February.

The ABC-CLIO Leadership Grant assists AASL-affiliated school library media associations to plan and implement leadership programs.

The Frances Henne Award, sponsored by R.R. Bowker Company, assists a school library media specialist in attending an AASL conference or American Library Association annual conference for the first time.

AASL and Highsmith Research Grants offer educators support for innovative research aimed at measuring and evaluating the impact of school library media programs on learning and education.

The Information Plus Continuing Education Scholarship offers awards to attend an ALA or AASL conference.

The Distinguished School Administrators Award recognizes a school administrator for making an outstanding and sustained contribution to advancing the role of the school library media center.

The $3,000 Distinguished Service Award honors a librarian who has made a significant contribution to school librarianship and school library development.

The Information Technology Pathfinder Award recognizes innovative approaches to microcomputer applications in the school library media center.

The SIRS Intellectual Freedom Award honors an individual who has upheld the principles of intellectual freedom.

The AASL Collaborative School Library Media Award recognizes and hopes to encourage collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and teachers in meeting educational goals outlined in Information Power.

The Gates Millennium Scholars award program is aimed at increasing the number of low-income African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, American Indian/Alaska Natives, and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Deadline: early February.

Iowa State University's American Government Web Design Contest awards scholarships to high school students who create exceptional educational Web sites in the subject area of American government. Deadline: early February.

NASA Student Involvement Progam offers several national competitions for students in grades three through 12, linking students directly with NASA's mission of research exploration. Deadline: early February.

ThinkQuest Junior, sponsored by Advanced Network and Services, Inc., encourages teams of students in grades four through six to create educational Web sites on a variety of subjects. Deadline: early February.

Toshiba/ExploraVision Awards is a K-12 science competition for U.S. and Canadian student teams to envision what a form of technology might look like in 20 years. Deadline: early February.

The Horace Mann Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to high school seniors who are the children of U.S. public education employees. Deadline: mid-February.

The National Science Foundation's Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching honor outstanding science and mathematics teachers. Deadline: mid-February.

The United States Department of Energy's Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowships provide full-time elementary and secondary math and science teachers in public or private schools the opportunity to work in Washington, D.C., for one year. Deadline: late February.

Sponsored by Compaq and the Education for Tomorrow Alliance, Compaq Sci://Tech is an annual science project competition for Houston area junior and senior high school students. Deadline: check with local schools. Competition is late February.

NASA Educational Workshops provide educators the opportunity to work with the network's education department in the summer. Deadline: late February.

International Schools' CyberFair encourages teams of students ages five through eighteen to showcase the best of their local communities by developing their own Web sites. Deadline for teams to register: February 28.

March

The National Endowment for the Humanities supports a variety of summer seminars and institutes for schoolteachers. Deadline: March 1.

The Ayn Rand Institute's Ayn Rand Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest offers cash awards to winning essays from undergraduate students. Deadline: early March.

Inspiration Software's "Inspired" Teacher Scholarships for Visual Learning support ongoing training in technology and visual learning for teachers across the United States. Deadline: early March.

The Korea Society's National Essay Contest, open to teachers and students, grades 9-12 throughout the United States, encourages participants to combine factual information and personal interpretation to various aspects of Korea, past and present. Deadline: early March.

The Craftsman/NSTA Young Inventors Award Program awards a fourth- through sixth-grade student savings bonds for the creative invention of a tool or modification of an existing tool. Deadline: mid-March.

C-SPAN's High-School Teacher Fellowship Program winners work with the network's education department in the summer. Deadline: mid-March.

U.S. Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Technology Opportunities Program provides matching grants for information infrastructure projects. Deadline: mid-March.

The National Council for the Social Studies sponsors three awards in March:

The Grant for the Enhancement of Geographic Literacy is awarded to an educator who is promoting geographic literacy through integrating geography into the social studies curriculum. Deadline: March 22.

The Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year Awards honor exemplary elementary, middle-level, and secondary social studies teachers. Deadline: March 22.

The Spirit of America Award annually honors an individual who has made a significant or special contribution that exemplifies the "American Democratic Spirit." Deadline: late March.

Focus Enhancements' Thoughts and Dreams Contest invites students in grades seven through 12 to submit student-produced video productions. Deadline: March 25.

The American Teacher Awards, sponsored by the Walt Disney Co., honor creative teachers who inspire students to learn in pre-K through grade 12, public or private schools. Deadline for nominations: March 31.

The NASA Ames Research Center Annual Space Settlement Design Contest invites students from around the world in grades 6-12 (ages 11-18) to submit designs for an orbital space settlement (a permanent community in orbit) to NASA Ames. Deadline: March 31.

The American Welding Society Foundation, Inc., sponsors several scholarships for students pursuing careers in welding and related fields. Deadline for international and district scholarships: April 1.

The Ayn Rand Institute annually features the Anthem Essay Contest for ninth- and tenth-grade students and The Fountainhead Essay Contest for eleventh- and twelfth-grade students. Deadlines: April 1 and April 15, respectively.

Multimedia Mania, sponsored by HyperSIG, the Multimedia Special Interest Group of the International Society for Technology in Education, is a contest for teachers who use multimedia in the classroom. Deadline for registration: April 1.

The National Council for the Social Studies' Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year Awards annually recognize one elementary, one middle level, and two secondary exemplary social studies teachers. Deadline: April 1.

The IDW Penny Severns Memorial Scholarships for Government Service, offered by the Illinois Democratic Women, honor women who want to attend college, whether right out of high school or later in their lives. Deadline: early April.

The School Librarian's Workshop Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student preparing to become a school library media specialist at the preschool, elementary, or secondary level. Deadline: early April.

The SMARTer Kids Connections program promotes self-understanding and connection to family, fellow students, and the global community for classes in grades five and six. Deadline: early April.

AbleNet's Inclusion Award recognizes teams of educators for outstanding creative use of simple technology to effectively achieve goals and improve the quality of life for those involved. Deadline: April 15.

National Endowment for the Humanities Focus Grants support K-12 and college teachers in collaborative studies on selected humanities topics. Deadline: April 15.

The International Space Settlement Design Competition is an industry simulation for teams of high school students to prepare designs for a space settlement in Earth orbit. Deadline: mid-April.

Time Warner Cable National Teacher Awards recognize outstanding teachers or teacher teams who develop educational experiences for students that combine cable television programming with creative teaching. Deadline: mid-April.

Dirksen Congressional Center's Congressional Research Award invites applications from Ph.D. candidates for grants to fund research on congressional leadership and the U.S. Congress. Deadline: late April.

The Do Something Award honors and financially supports ten outstanding young people in grades K-12 who are taking action to measurably strengthen their local communities. Deadline: early May.

ThinkQuest Internet Challenge encourages students ages 12 through 19 to work in local or international teams to create educational tools on the Internet. Deadline for registration: early May.

ArsDigita Foundation's ArsDigita Prize recognizes achievement by young people who have built and maintained Web services. Deadline: mid-May.

The U.S.A. Songwriting Competition invites composers of original songs to enter this international songwriting competition. Deadline: late May.

National Semiconductor's Internet Innovator Awards recognize K-12 educators in National's three major U.S. locations for innovative integration of Internet technology into their curriculum. Deadline: early June.

Science Service's Discovery Young Scientists Challenge awards students in grades 5-8 who have placed in a category judging of an ISEF-affiliated fair. Scholarships are based on the scientific merit of their work and their ability to communicate the science of their project. Deadline: early June.

Multiple Deadlines/No Deadlines

The AT&T Foundation's AT&T Learning Network Grants Program is open to all accredited public and private elementary and secondary schools as well as accredited public and private two- and four-year institutions of higher education and educational nonprofit organizations seeking to use technology to enhance teaching and learning. No deadlines.

Coca-Cola Foundation Grants support innovative K-12 public school programs and those outside the "four walls" of the classroom; teacher development programs; and smaller projects dealing with specific activities in the elementary and secondary classroom. Deadlines are quarterly: March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1.

The Dirksen Congressional Center sponsors the Robert H. Michel Civic Education Grants, designed to help teachers, curriculum developers, and others improve the quality of civics instruction, with priority on the role of Congress in our federal government. Deadlines: October 1, January 1, and May 1.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for students in grades nine through 12 begins with local ISEF-affiliated science fairs before proceeding to the International Fair in May.

International Library of Photography sponsors the International Open Amateur Photography Contest, inviting all photographers, especially beginners, to submit one photograph per monthly contest. Deadline: 15th of each month.

Kellogg Foundation Grants, funded by the W.W. Kellogg Foundation, are available to non-profit organizations and support information systems/technology, among other areas. No deadlines.

National Endowment for the Humanities' Extending the Reach grants are designed to strengthen the humanities at historically Black, Hispanic-serving, and Tribal colleges and universities. Deadlines: May 1 and September 1.

The National Library of Poetry sponsors the monthly Open Amateur Poetry Contest, inviting all poets regardless of experience to submit one poem per month. Deadline: the last day of every month.

The National Science Foundation's highly competitive Connections to the Internet grants are awarded for innovative approaches for Internet access. Deadlines: July 31 and January 31.

The NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education Innovation Grants support two or more public school teachers, education support personnel, and/or faculty in public institutions of higher education who collaborate to develop and implement innovative ideas that result in high student achievement. Deadline: March 15.

The NEC Foundation of America provides grant support for programs that promote science and technology education, focusing on secondary level efforts and applications of technology that assist people with disabilities. Deadlines: September 1 and March 1.

The Nellie Mae Fund for Education provides grant funding to schools and organizations in New England for adult literacy, college preparation, minority high achievement, and out-of-school-time programs. No deadlines.

Pew Charitable Trusts funds many types of programs for which educational organizations are eligible. No deadlines.

The SMARTer Kids Foundation's PREP Grant is a competitive program for teacher-training centers to obtain substantial discounts on the purchase of SMART products. Deadlines vary throughout the year.

Software Publishers Association's CyberSurfari challenges individuals, families, and teacher-supervised school teams in a World Wide Web treasure hunt. Contests begin in June, October, and March.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance grants are awarded to teachers for implementing tolerance projects in their schools and communities. No deadlines.

The Sprint Foundation provides grants for programs that encourage innovation and the use of technology in the classroom, enhance the quality of education for minorities and/or the disadvantaged, target drug and alcohol education, provide broad-scale community youth activities focused on building leadership and social skills, and promote business and economic education for youth. No deadlines.

Target Store Community Grants focus on arts education programs and domestic violence prevention. No deadlines.

The Toshiba America Foundation Grants Program awards grants for programs and activities that improve the classroom teaching and learning of science, mathematics, and technology for students in grades K-12. No deadlines for proposals of $5,000 or less. Deadlines for larger grants: first business day of February and August.

The Toyota USA Foundation is committed to improving the quality of K-12 education, with a primary interest in mathematics and science. No deadlines.

The Women's Sports Foundation's Aspire Higher Grassroots Grant is designed to support creative and innovative programs that encourage girls and women to participate in sports and fitness. Deadlines are quarterly: March 31, June 30, September 30, and December.
