frontpath has begun shipping ProGear, a portable wireless Web appliance that comes with the Linux 2.4.x operating system, Netscape version 4.74, a 10.4" TFT display, as well as a soft keyboard and touch screen for quick access to the Internet. Available in hard disk drive or thin client versions. Estimated price: $1,500.

Gateway has rolled out the Solo 1200 notebook computer, with features that include 750 MHz processing power; 128MB RAM; a 10GB hard drive; CD-ROM and floppy disk drives; built-in Ethernet, modem, and wireless connectivity; plus the Microsoft ME operating system (discounts for Office XP will be available in October). Prices start at $999. The company has also announced a new service program for its education customers, Gateway TechSource, that will provide customized on-site and remote IT support for schools.

Hewlett-Packard has announced the HP Mobile Computing K-12 Classroom, a motorized cart that houses 30 HP Omnibook Notebook PCs, a printer, scanner, copier, fax, and digital camera. Also included: NetSchools Orion service, which offers student content and curriculum management tools, and the Discourse Teaching Suite from Mindsurf Networks.

Symbol Technologies has released a second-generation, Pocket PC-based handheld computer, the PPT 2800, which integrates bar code scanning and Pocket PC functionality as well as wireless local-area and wireless wide-area connectivity options. The device weighs in at 10 ounces (12 ounces for the wireless version) and has been designed to withstand being dropped up to four feet.

Presentation Tools
The latest ELMO visual presenter, the HV-3000XG, can display both 2-D and 3-D images at a resolution of 1024 x 768, and includes a USB port that permits users to capture and download images to their computers for storage or manipulation. The unit, listed at $2,950, weighs in at 13.2 pounds.

InFocus has announced the LP290 LCD projector, which features XGA resolution, 1,100 lumens, a short throw zoom lens, video capability, remote control, and ceiling mount options. $3,999.

NEC's new 8.6-pound MultiSync VT line of projectors offer 1,000 ANSI lumens and up to XGA compatibility (800 x 600 for the VT400, 1024 x 768 for the VT540). NEC's AutoSense and Accublend technologies optimize incoming images and automatically adjust image size to the screen.
