Animation on a Shoestring

A simple classroom animation stand can be created with a tabletop tripod (these can be bought at a camera store) and a digital camera. By using cutout shapes and repositioning elements before taking each photo, even very young students are able to create cutout animation. In the absence of a digital camera, a scanner can also work for this type of animation. Sometimes called silhouette animation, the cutout shape approach can be used in a variety of creative ways. Collage elements (kids like using comic book heroes) and even toy action figures can be starting points for interesting projects.
