Taking the Initiative: Three Ed Tech Programs
Over the spring and summer months, Technology & Learning editors took time out to visit three technology programs-one in Massachusetts and two in California. We went without agendas for the purpose of observing and learning, and what we found were three very different emerging efforts stemming from a need to solve three very different problems. In one case, a chamber of commerce identified a need for more high-tech workers and became the impetus for a brand new type of school, High Tech High. In another case, a university computer science and engineering department was alarmed by the lack of diversity in its student population and so created the Berkeley Foundation for Opportunities in Information Technology with the specific aim of recruiting minority students.
The third case was a situation readers will probably find most familiar-a district grappling with how best to integrate technology into their schools across the board. Despite the differences that separate these programs, borne out through the successes and disappointments of each is the awesome power of initiative and commitment.
