Awards of Excellence
By Kristen Kennedy
This year, the 19th year of Technology & Learning's Awards of Excellence, we celebrate excellence and innovation. Our winners reflect an increasing diversity of educational offerings, from familiar drill-and-practice programs to network-based student information systems. More than 55 teacher-judges carefully evaluated over 120 software, hardware, and Web-based products-from intricate filtering tools to complex teacher resource packages. The result is the most eclectic mix of curriculum products, administrative tools, and professional development resources we've seen yet, a dialogue, if you will, of the inventive ways publishers are meeting the diverse needs of today's educators.
You'll also see a few changes this year. We listened to your requests that we focus more exclusively on school products, so readers familiar with our program of past years will notice the omission of a home learning category this time around. This change allowed us to channel our energies into the time-intensive task of reviewing some more complex offerings, such as school management systems and hardware-software lab tools. This year we also recognize four finalists for the very first time—our way of honoring some of the most promising advances in education technology that didn't make the last cut in the judging process.
Congratulations to the 29 winners and four finalists of the 2001 Technology & Learning Awards of Excellence.
