Unknowns and Knowns
What will the model scientific research-based reading classroom look like? How will curriculum materials be chosen and who will choose them? What kinds of technology products will find a home in schools? Will the curriculum be narrowed to accommodate only those skills that can be easily measured? Will there in fact be any changes at all? These are just a few of the unknowns educators-and very likely the creators of Reading First-are grappling with at this point.

But within this sea of unknowns also comes a whole school of possibilities and opportunities. This new accountability asks us all to take a hard look at methods and practices we may not have questioned for some time. Perhaps, as software, Web, and other content vendors continue to refine their offerings to be more essential, accessible, and relevant to learners, we'll begin to see more of the innovation that made the ed tech industry such an exciting and vital force to begin with.
