Is Wireless Worth It? (cont'd)
Fully Wired or Integrated? 10 Questions to Ask
Intel's recently released "A Roadmap for the Wireless School of the Future" brings to the fore key infrastructure questions and considerations for deciding whether to go with a completely wireless or a blended technology solution. Following are two excerpts from that study.
- Does the school already have Internet access? If so, what percentage of classrooms are connected to the Internet?
- Does the school have its own server on-site, or is it drawing from the district office? If the school has a server, how big and how fast is it? Is it adequate for loading content?
- What level of content does the school hope to deploy? What is the next step toward distributing content? Does the school in question plan to use the content exclusively, or share it among several schools?
- What does a school have in place from the curriculum standpoint?
- Where does the school get its online curriculum? For example, is it posted on site or off site?
- Does the school have a technology plan in place? If so, what does the plan encompass? Does the plan have a refresh rate built into it?
- Is the school or district planning to move toward a wireless environment?
- Are any new buildings being constructed, or are there plans to do so in the near future?
- Is the school using portable classrooms that would make wireless technology more cost-effective than laying hard wires?
- Does the school have a T-1 or other high-speed data link?
