Ken's Konnections #11 - Language Arts

These Konnections are especially for language arts, literature, English, and grammar teachers. Included are Shakespeare, grammar, dictionaries, how to speak Chinese sites, and even sign language. There are places for students to publish their own work, too. You will find them a great addition to classroom language arts study. Maybe after visiting them, you'll want to build a Language Arts site yourself.
Sonnet Central
This is a great site for reading and learning about sonnets and their history. You can even hear a few sonnets read aloud. I listened to "The Soldier" by Rupert Brooke. I remembered reading it in high school; it was wonderful to have it read to me.
KidPub
KidPub offers a place where students can publish material online with other students from around the world. If you're looking for a more formal way to have students show what they write, this may be it. Take a look at the student work already there and see if your students want to write for KidPub, too.
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
This site has become one of my favorites. It offers every line of Shakespeare and even some help with meaning, with specific words hyperlinked to helpful clues, insight, and meaning. The site comprises four main categories: comedy, history, tragedy, and poetry. You have to see this one to believe it. It would leave old Will speechless!
Learn Chinese
This site is a treat. If you want to learn a few Chinese phases, this is the site for you. Choose the phase you want to learn, click on it, and your hear the phrase in Chinese. Save it to your computer and you can repeat the lesson over and over. Just a fun site.
American Sign Language Browser
This one is from Michigan State. You can choose phases that you want to say, click, and you will see the sign language in movie form. These can be saved on your computer for practice later. This is fun and extremely useful.
Writing Center Handouts
This site has some pretty neat handouts for teachers on grammar and its mechanics, research, the writing process, special kinds of writing, and more.
Big Dog's Grammar: A Bare Bones Guide to English
Here we have a list of the bare essentials we should address in students' writing, including those things that English teachers love to comment on in your papers.
Guide to Writing and Grammar
This well-organized and complete grammar information site divides its material into sentence, paragraph, and essay levels.
Grammar Dictionary A to Z
This dictionary listing teaches grammar by example. Simply click on a letter and learn a bit of grammar.
A Concise Grammar
A Concise Grammar's seven sections look at sentences, their grammar, and punctuation.
Merriam-Webster Online: The Language Center
Both a dictionary and thesaurus are on the same page. This site is great for looking up a word or finding the best word.
English-Zone.com Grammar
This site offers grammar lessons and short interactive quizzes with answers.
