National Women's History Month

In 1981, as a result of lobbying efforts by the National Women's History Project (NWHP), a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to "promot[ing] gender equity through education about women's diverse lives and accomplishments," Congress declared a Joint Congressional Resolution for "National Women's History Week". In 1987 the celebration was expanded to an entire month - March.

What Did You Do in the War Grandma? An Oral History of Rhode Island Women during World War II
Written by Honors English students at South Kingstown High School in Rhode Island, twenty six interviews present the diversity of women's roles in World War II. A pacificist, a journalist, a "farm girl play[ing] professional baseball," a school teacher, a scientist, a teenage WAC volunteer, a single mother with six children, a psychiatric nurse in the Philippines - the stories are personal, intimate and vivid.

Women's Early Music/Art/Poetry

Gifts of Speech: Women's Speeches From Around the World
Dedicated to preserving and creating access to speeches by influential contemporary women from around the world, this growing collection contains speeches from notable women in all fields of human accomplishment. Speeches can be accessed by browsing last names or browsing the chronological index as well as by keyword searching. Most of the speeches have never been published in paper format, but have been acquired directly from the woman who gave the speech.
Quotations by Notable Women
Quotes from over 250 notable women throughout time. The serendipity of alphabetical arrangement creates such juxtapositions as Boedicea next to Erma Bombeck and Florence Nightingale and Anais Nin. The number of quotes per woman varies from one to a dozen or more, with some full text poems included and occasional links to sources of biographical information.

An exploration of "the conning of American women into the pursuit of a perfect body" this Master's project presentation features online exhibits arranged around five themes: body as history, a timeline of key events impacting women's body image, from the 1850s through the 1990s; body as commodity, investigations into the commercial and economic pressures shaping women's body image today; forbidden food, explorations of eating disorders and their causes; fighting back, examples of women who refuse to accept the status quo; and body modification, descriptions of and statistics related to the cosmetic procedures to which women submit themselves.
