Keyboarding vs Cursive?

The debate about the value of teaching children cursive handwriting skills continues. Sometimes the debate is cast as teaching keyboarding versus teaching cursive, but handwriting aside, there are reasons children should learn to keyboard.

c) In fourth grade

d) In the primary grades

As a Keyboarding instructor (Business Technology 9~12) my beliefs are reinforced daily. Keyboarding should be taught from the beginning whether that be pre-K or Kindergarten. High School students have such ghastly techniques by the time we see them in High School reversing the dammage is often not possible. Please let me also comment that I am a huge advocate of the personallly written note/card for thank you's and other similar correspondence. There is nothing like a handwritten note to make anyone's day.

All 4th, 5th, and 6th graders get 20 structured days of keyboarding. Some of the earlier grade teachers expose their students to Type to Learn, but no formal training exists at that level.

Although have formal keyboarding instruction in 6th grade, we begin to teach the basics of keyboarding (i.e. home row hand position) as early as 1st grade. With the younger students, we feel it is important to know where to find the keys not necessarily which finger/hand to use. Their hands are still developing so it is sometimes difficult to reach across the adult-sized keyboard. They have plenty of time to develop their speed and accuracy keyboarding skills. It is more important to make it fun and exciting than to "slap them on the wrist" (to speak of an old-school technique some of you may remember) for using the incorrect finger. The kids love the challenge of improving their technique without the added pressure.

I begin keyboarding skills (along with computer health concepts) at the Kindergarten level. There are plenty of great online resources that provide learners at this age with appropriate skill-building content.
