PRESENTATION/PRODUCTIVITY

Faronics Anti-Executable Enterprise
(Faronics)

School IT professionals welcomed this enterprise solution to protecting school network and computer security from debilitating viruses and spyware as well as chat programs, games, and illegal software that can take kids off task. The program works on install by taking inventory of all executable programs currently operating on a computer and refusing to authorize the launch or installation of any new programs.

Windows; contact publisher for pricing; visit www.faronics.com. (Grades K-12)

iWork '06
(Apple Computer)

Judges liked how easily iWork could be used to integrate technology into classroom projects as well as "other programs in the Mac suite." Joining ease of use and powerful design features, iWork combines Keynote, Apple's solution for producing media-rich presentations, and Pages, a design tool that lets users build image-enhanced documents from Apple's template library, into one robust package.

Microsoft Student 2006
(Microsoft)

This do-it-all reference and productivity program "covers multiple subject areas in depth" by bundling the Encarta research and information library and Microsoft's familiar Office suite applications with math tutorials and foreign language help. Judges raved about Student's wide range of functions and features. "It has everything I've been looking for," wrote one judge. "It has all the things that teachers want to teach their students," said another.

MobilePresenter BT
(Numonics Corp.)

Similar to touch screens used on tablet PCs, the Mobilepresenter BT allows a user to communicate with a computer via Bluetooth. The user navigates the screen and controls the computer remotely using a stylus, allowing presentations to be projected from the computer while the user moves around the room. The judges liked the concept and usability of the product and felt that it could be useful in most classroom environments. "The presenter can input information during the presentation," one said. Another compared it to a tablet PC, saying the unit "felt good in the hands, making it more likely to be used."

Hardware; $495.

Photoshop Elements plus Adobe Premiere Elements
(Adobe Systems)

These two powerful image and video editing programs bring state-of-the-art technologies to the desktop. Students can use the intuitively designed Photoshop Elements to upload, print, and design professional-quality digital images or film Dolby-quality sound enhanced movies that they can then burn to a DVD. Ideal for use across the curriculum, Adobe's multimedia editing suite also includes a Teacher Resource CD, and online tutorials on Adobe's site offer great resources for getting started.

Windows; $119. (Grades K-12)

Pixie
(Tech4Learning)

This "Photoshop for the elementary school crowd" offers sophisticated drawing, painting, and design features as well as slideshow capabilities that young students can master quickly. Kids can color, sticker, and stamp their creations or draw from an online gallery of royalty-free images. "This program will help students grasp the basics of digital design and concepts that they can apply in more advanced design projects," wrote one judge.

Mac/Win; $44.95. (Grades K-5)
