Math scores rise with use of interactive program

Raytown School District near Kansas City, Missouri has renewed an investment in Carnegie Learning® Math Curricula following an initial three years of implementation that delivered measureable improvement in math scores.

Carnegie Learning® Bridge to Algebra Textbooks and Cognitive Tutor® Software continue to be used as Raytown's core math programs in the district's three middle schools, and Cognitive Tutor® Algebra I and Geometry software will serve as supplemental, intervention math solutions in Raytown's two high schools and with advanced middle school students.

In 2006, Raytown School District expanded their use of Carnegie Learning® Math Programs as part of the school improvement effort to demonstrate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) objectives. Like many school districts across the country, Raytown was experiencing a downward trend on state math assessment tests scores as students progressed to higher-grade levels. In the three years since initial implementation of Carnegie Learning curricula, graduation rates have increased by 6%.

"The differentiation provided by Carnegie Learning Cognitive Tutor Software allows students to work at an individualized pace and be successful mathematical problem solvers," said Dr. Janie Pyle, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Raytown School District. "Since implementing Carnegie Learning Math curricula, more students are engaged in mathematics and have a greater understanding of how mathematics is applied to everyday situations."

The $215,000 purchase includes curricula that integrate interactive software sessions, textbooks, and student-centered classroom instruction, supported by an ongoing Professional Development program.
