Spark Collaboration with Google Hangouts

Spark Collaboration with Google Hangouts

Shelly Terrell’s top tips for Google Hangouts include:

1 Record the Hangout session with Hangouts on Air or just video chat with Video Hangout.
2 Edit your recording on Youtube.com/editor.
3 Download the free Hangouts app available for iOS and Android.
4 Have students get to know each other by adding their names with the Lower Third feature located in the Hangout Toolbox app.
5 Screenshare and text chat work best using the browser version (versus the mobile app).
6 With chat, share clickable links and have a backchannel while the recording takes place. The chat does not get recorded in the video.
7 Give students different roles—leader, reporter, note-taker, distributer.
8 Have at least one student take notes on a Google Doc, since the chat does not record.
9 With the screenshare app, students can peer-edit papers, collaborate on a Google slide presentation, have a debate, complete Google spreadsheets, and more.
10 Empower your Hangout with add-on apps such as the Scoot and Doodle, Soundation, Cacoo, Symphonical, and Google Art Project.
