The Learning Network: Celebrate Black History Month

1/31/2014 6:00:00 PM
The New York Times offers an extensive array of materials that can be used to celebrate Black History Month. There are many links to newspaper front pages commemorating important events in black history. They range from the Dred Scot decision to the election of President Obama. The years of 1964 and 1965 have several representations as would be expected from their importance in the civil rights movement. Readers’ ideas on how to teach about the civil rights movement and a slide show of important photographs are also included. In addition are links to many lesson plans covering slavery, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, affirmative action, and an exploration of race in America.
