Documenting the American South: Twelve Years a Slave

11/8/2013 By:

The subject of the new movie Twelve Years a Slave, Solomon Northup, has a compelling life story. Northup was born a free man, living in New York, when he was kidnapped in 1841 and sold to a plantation in Louisiana. After he was rescued twelve years later, he wrote a narrative of his life as a slave. This site gives a summary of that incredible story, and will introduce you to Solomon Northup. At the end of the page, you’ll find a link to the actual text of his book.
