Ferdinand Magellan

9/20/2013 By:

On September 20, 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships entered the Atlantic for what would be a three years’ circumnavigation of the globe less 14 days. This comprehensive site includes not just a relating of the perilousness of the voyage and the many hardships encountered, but also historic maps and drawings of ships of the period. Read about the mutinies, the long journey through the strait that bears Magellan’s name, the death of Magellan in the Philippines, and the eventual return of a single ship on September 6, 1522. You might be surprised to find out that the voyage was actually profitable!
