Illuminations: Seeing Music

3/6/2014 By:

Here’s a great lesson plan for high school students from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as its contribution to the celebration of Music in the Schools month. The main objectives of the lesson are for students to be able to match scales to frequencies that are produced by a geometric sequence, and to see how sine waves relate to harmony and dissonance in chords. The necessary activity sheets are provided, as are a list of materials and questions for wrapping up the lesson.
