National Geographic Education: GIS in Action
A Geographic Information System (GIS) allows the user to overlay various kinds of information on a map to compile patterns that show how these pieces of information interact. This site from National Geograph
ic focuses on endangered animals: the humpback whale, bald eagle, African elephant, giant panda, and koala. The map for each animal shows some common information, such as where the animal lives, and where people live in relation to that, but also includes some mapping information specific to that animal. Each animal also has a little “biography,” and there is a critical thinking question asking what might be most helpful in protecting each animal. Use this site for geographical awareness, and for showing the benefits of GIS.
