On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, thus marking a change in the goals of the Civil War to include the abolition of slavery in addition to maintaining the Union.  This comprehensive lesson for students grades 9-12 includes lesson plans, primary source documents, learning objectives, guiding questions, and links to sites for additional research.
