The National Archives: Gunpowder Plot

11/4/2013 By:

Perhaps you’ve wondered about the origin of the stylized masks worn by members of the hacker group, Anonymous, and those in the Occupy movement. They harken back to Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 in England. November 5 celebrates the failed conspiracy to assassinate King James I by Guy Fawkes and his cohorts. The mask was used on an effigy of Guy Fawkes and came to symbolize protest. With this site you can try to uncover the plans of those who plotted against James I by examining primary source documents that relate to the plot. The site includes some notes for teachers for using this in a lesson, as well as extension activities.
